CHAPTER

SEVENTEEN

Percy woke late, feeling drowsy, almost drugged. Shaking herself awake, she felt a sharp pain in her chest when she sat up and knew something was different about the day. Rushing to Violet’s hall in the house, she listened for any sign of her, not wishing to barge in on her. She had to remember her daughter was her own woman and her fate was her own.

Violet’s boudoir and bedroom door stood open. From the doorway, Percy saw a note on her daughter’s bed. Already knowing Violet was gone, Percy entered the room, picked up the note, and read it.

Mummy dear, I’ve gone early to Athens. Don’t worry.

Percy breathed a bit easier, but still had the feeling that a great shift had begun. She found another copy of the note on the breakfast table; probably left there to be sure it wouldn’t be missed. When Alexi asked after Violet, Percy showed him the note.

“Ah, good then. Studious. Couldn’t ask for a better quality,” Alexi stated.

Percy smiled.

Violet was nowhere to be found at Athens, but then again, her work sometimes took her to other institutions. Percy refused to panic or to become a victim of fearing the worst. She asked Rebecca if she’d seen her daughter but to no avail, so she focused on her students and the rigors of language.

Between assignments that afternoon, her office door was suddenly thrown open by a very distressed Josephine. She was dressed in an indigo day dress and floral shawl, her dark hair up in a braided crown, her olive skin looking nearly green. Before Percy could ask what was wrong, a note was nearly thrown in her lap. She read, in sweeping script:

Dear Lord Withersby,

I have been dreaming of you in a most dire manner. Please come visit me directly at this address in Grimsby post-haste.

Sincerely in fate,

Belle
